At XV. gimnazija, students have the opportunity to participate in projects that not only expand their knowledge but also positively impact our community. Two such recent initiatives, the STEPS Project and the GEO EKO Group, exemplify how collaborative efforts can bring about meaningful change.
STEPS Project: Building a Sustainable Future
As part of the Erasmus+ program, the STEPS Project challenges students to explore relevant and impactful topics. This year, the group decided to focus on “green roofs,” a concept that combines urban development with sustainability. The project aims to investigate how green roofs can address various challenges, including those of our school building.
The interdisciplinary nature of the project encourages students to find innovative solutions drawing from biology, ecology, climatology, construction, and architecture. Beyond gaining valuable skills and knowledge, participants hope their efforts will inspire the local community—and perhaps even other schools—to consider green roofs as a practical way to enhance urban spaces.
By joining STEPS, either this school year or next, students can engage in a variety of projects that include hands-on learning, contribute to an environmentally conscious initiative, and collaborate with external partners to make a difference in the community.
GEO EKO Group: Planting Seeds for Tomorrow
On December 5th, 22 students from XV. gimnazija accompanied by their teacher Berislav Rusan participated in a reforestation project in Lekenik, a village in Croatia. Together, they planted 500 oak saplings, contributing to the preservation and expansion of Croatia’s forests.
Before getting to work, the students attended an educational session about the importance of forests in maintaining ecosystems and Croatia’s leading role in forestry management in Europe. Participants not only gained insights into ecological sustainability but also worked together toward a common goal.
Joining the GEO EKO Group allows students to take part in projects that directly benefit the environment, fostering a sense of accomplishment and responsibility toward nature.
Why Get Involved?
Both the STEPS Project and GEO EKO Group offer students the chance to develop practical skills, broaden their knowledge, and contribute to the betterment of our community. Whether you’re passionate about sustainability, ecology, or interdisciplinary problem-solving, these projects allow you to make a tangible impact.
Joining these and similar initiatives and groups in our school helps students improve teamwork and leadership skills and provides them with a deeper understanding of issues that shape our world, as well as a chance to do something about those issues.
